Most Figma searches come from two places: a freelancer priced out by per-editor seats, or a team whose engineers never open the file and only want the CSS.
If you are leaving over price, check whether the alternative charges per editor or per file. That distinction decides the bill more than the headline number.
Side by side
| Tool | Pricing | Best for | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framer | Freemium | A designer building a marketing site or landing page who does not want to hand off to a developer. | Web, macOS, Windows |
| Penpot | Free | A design team at a company that will not put client files in a US-hosted SaaS. | Web, Self-hosted |
The options, and what each one costs you
- Better if
- A designer building a marketing site or landing page who does not want to hand off to a developer.
- You give up
- It is not the right tool for application UI, and pricing scales with site traffic in a way that can surprise you.
- Better if
- A design team at a company that will not put client files in a US-hosted SaaS.
- You give up
- The plugin ecosystem is thin, the community file libraries are far smaller, and there is no round-trip with Figma files, so switching means redrawing.
Frequently asked
What is the best alternative to Figma?
It depends on what you are leaving for. If you are leaving over price, check whether the alternative charges per editor or per file. That distinction decides the bill more than the headline number. Our closest match on features and price is Framer.
Is there a free alternative to Figma?
Framer is free to start. Penpot is free to start.
How much does switching from Figma cost?
Migration is usually the expensive part, not the licence: exports rarely preserve permissions, history or automations. Budget a day per active workspace for anything with a database in it.
