Obsidian loses people at the sync step: the files are yours, but keeping two devices in agreement costs either money or patience.
Decide first whether you want local files at all. If you do not, every alternative below will feel like an upgrade for a month and a downgrade in year two.
Side by side
| Tool | Pricing | Best for | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craft | Freemium | A consultant writing client proposals who wants documents that look designed without a template. | macOS, iOS, Windows |
| Notion | Freemium | A startup that wants its handbook, roadmap, and meeting notes in one searchable workspace. | Web, macOS, Windows |
The options, and what each one costs you
- Better if
- A consultant writing client proposals who wants documents that look designed without a template.
- You give up
- It started Apple-first, so the Windows and web versions lag behind, real-time collaboration is weaker than Notion's, and moving a large workspace out later is fiddly.
- Better if
- A startup that wants its handbook, roadmap, and meeting notes in one searchable workspace.
- You give up
- The flexibility is also the trap, because it is easy to spend more time designing a system than using it, and large databases get slow.
Frequently asked
What is the best alternative to Obsidian?
It depends on what you are leaving for. Decide first whether you want local files at all. If you do not, every alternative below will feel like an upgrade for a month and a downgrade in year two. Our closest match on features and price is Craft.
Is there a free alternative to Obsidian?
Craft is free to start. Notion is free to start.
How much does switching from Obsidian cost?
Migration is usually the expensive part, not the licence: exports rarely preserve permissions, history or automations. Budget a day per active workspace for anything with a database in it.
